Project Scope

On Tuesday, February 13, 2024, Morristown Central School District residents voted (144 to 41) to pass a $16.9 million capital improvement project. The project addresses concerns identified in a recent Building Conditions Survey, and will focus on building infrastructure, space adequacy, and safety & security.

Improvements to building infrastructure include roof and boiler replacements, HVAC, parking lots, masonry restoration, and site drainage maintenance in the transportation building.

Improvements to address space adequacy include reconstruction of the kitchen and serving area, cafeteria renovation, the addition of food storage and a loading dock for deliveries, renovation of the STEM classroom into an industrial arts and STEM Suite, minor upgrades to the gymnasium to replace seating and improve acoustics, expansion of the stage converting it to a dedicated performance space and the addition of a choral classroom and expanded fitness center with exterior community access. The project also includes the addition of a restroom that can be accessed from the exterior of the building to accommodate visitors at sporting and other events.

Lastly, improvements in safety and security include classroom door and lock replacements and individual toilet rooms throughout the elementary wing.

The project is largely being funded by state aid, with a building aid ratio of 79.9%. The school district is contributing $3 million from capital reserves, and another $500,000 from available funds. The remaining $28,118 will be funded by a tax levy increase, which will have a $0.095 impact per $1,000, or approximately $10 per year on a $100,000 home.
