April 8th Eclipse Extravaganza

**Important Note: Students must be signed up and parents pre-registered by 3/22 so we can accurately plan for supervision and events.

We are excited to announce our upcoming Eclipse Extravaganza event scheduled for April 8th at Morristown Central School District. This event promises to be an engaging and educational experience for our students.

On April 8th, students will be dismissed at 1:00 p.m. due to the solar eclipse.  The solar eclipse is a celestial event, where the Moon will pass between the Earth and the Sun entirely blocking the Sun's light.  The path of totality, where the eclipse will be visible in its complete form, will traverse various regions across North America, including Morristown, NY.  During the total solar eclipse, observers within the path of totality will experience a brief period of darkness as the Moon obscures the Sun, revealing the Sun's corona, its outer atmosphere, which is typically not visible. This astronomical event offers a rare opportunity for sky gazers, astronomers, and enthusiasts to witness the awe-inspiring phenomenon of a total solar eclipse.

The 2024 total solar eclipse presents an exciting and educational event for communities within the path of totality, providing a chance to witness one of nature's most breathtaking spectacles and offering a unique opportunity for scientific observation and study.  Safety precautions must be taken when observing a solar eclipse directly. Specialized eclipse glasses or solar viewing devices are necessary to protect one's eyes from the Sun's harmful rays during any phase of the eclipse when the Sun is partially visible.  Morristown has purchased 500 eclipse glasses for this event.

The district will be dismissing at 1:00 p.m. on April 8th in order to get students home before the eclipse event.  However, we are pleased to offer educational programming for students who have permission to stay at school beyond the 1:00 p.m. dismissal time.

For students remaining at school (Permission Form):

  • Educational programming surrounding the solar eclipse will be available for students staying beyond 1:00 p.m., including viewing the eclipse around 3:20 p.m.
  • The After-School Program (ASP) 5:00 p.m. bus will be available to transport students home at the end of the event.

Additionally, parents who wish to attend the educational event at school alongside their child are welcome to join, starting at 2:15 p.m. To ensure proper arrangements and planning, parents intending to attend must sign up ahead of time by pre-registering here.

This event will provide an excellent opportunity for students to engage in learning experiences related to the eclipse, fostering curiosity, and expanding their understanding of scientific phenomena.  We encourage all interested parents and students to take advantage of this unique educational opportunity. Your participation and involvement in your child's learning journey are greatly valued and appreciated.  If you have any questions or require further information about the Eclipse Extravaganza event or the sign-up process, please feel free to contact the Main Office at 315-375-8814.
