Morristown Central School District Capital Improvement Project Vote

On Tuesday, February 13, 2024, Morristown Central School District residents will be asked to vote on a $16.9 million capital improvement project. The project will address concerns identified in a recent Building Conditions Survey. The project aims to address issues in the areas of building infrastructure, space adequacy, and safety & security.

Improvements to building infrastructure include roof and boiler replacements, HVAC, parking lots, masonry restoration, and site drainage maintenance in the transportation building.

Improvements to address space adequacy include reconstruction of the kitchen and serving area, cafeteria renovation, the addition of food storage and a loading dock for deliveries, renovation of the STEM classroom into an industrial arts and STEM Suite, minor upgrades to the gymnasium to replace seating and improve acoustics, expansion of the stage converting it to a dedicated performance space and the addition of a choral classroom and expanded fitness center with exterior community access. The project will also include the addition of a restroom that can be accessed from the exterior of the building to accommodate visitors at sporting and other events.

Lastly, improvements in safety and security include classroom door and lock replacements and individual toilet rooms throughout the elementary.

The project will be largely funded by state aid, with a building aid ratio of 79.9%. The school district will contribute $3 million from capital reserves, and another $500,000 from available funds. The remaining $28,118 will be funded by a tax levy increase, which will have a $0.095 impact per $$1,000, or approximately $10 per year on a $100,000 home.

For those interested in learning more and asking questions in person, an informational public hearing will be held on Tuesday, February 6, 2024, at 6 p.m. in the school library.

The capital project vote will be held in the main lobby at Morristown Central School from noon to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, February 13, 2024.
